Ways of Knowing Self
Tracking Your Moon Moods
Want to Learn How to Moon Map?
I recently wrote a reflection on Ways of Knowing through Tracking Your Moon Moods and Moon Mapping.
Thought I’d share it with you here.
If you’d like to follow along and track your Moon Moods with me using Tarot, Lenormand, and Astro Dice, be sure to get in on Magickal Magpie!
But first… this is a total guide to tracking how the moon affects your moods and your relationship with this immaculate celestial body. Let’s go.
“The clearest sign of flow is the experience of merging action and awareness” —Palmer
The ways in which we have knowingness, even when we can’t empirically prove our insight, is valuable. One of the most interesting and personally connective Ways of Knowing I’ve made a conscious and consistent part of my life, is Moon Mapping. This Way of Knowing is about tracking moods, energy levels, mental space, and self-awareness as the moon phases into the different zodiac constellations.
Unlike the sun that moves through these constellations each month (i.e. Gemini Season, Cancer Season, etc.), the moon moves through a zodiac constellation every 2.5-3 days. As we cycle, ebb and flow, this is a way I track my mental and emotional nature as it has to do with the celestial body of the moon.
I’m a believer in the moon affecting our bodies just as the moon moves the tides. Further, using one’s astrological natal chart, the snapshot of the stars at the moment of birth, to identify where the zodiac constellations land regarding the categories and layers of life, when the moon phases into them, it helps reveal what parts of life are affected during the moon’s phasing and astrological placement. It helps to have this knowing about Self in order to plan as well as feel in flow and connected with life, and not as if you are working against a universal current.
Since the moon moves through all 12 zodiac each month, about every 28 days, it could potentially only take 2 months to notice patterns. Once you’ve been tracking for a while, it is interesting to see what solidifies and correlates certain phases and signs.
When starting the quest to endeavor these patterns, it is important to note:
• What you’re feeling, your mental state; is there agitation, anxiety, neutrality, joyfulness, contentment?
• What are you dreaming about? Are you having lucid dreaming? What is your subconscious bringing to the surface to the conscious mind’s attention?
• What kind of conversations are you having or want to have? What interactions are standing out in your day? What are you overhearing?
• What is heavy on your heart or mind at this time? What are you desiring to bring full circle?
• What synchronicities are coming in?
• Who is contacting you? What is being asked of you and how do you feel about it?
• What memories are coming up during these times?
Making a conscious effort to dive into self-awareness is what brings a successful Moon Mapping chart.
I have tracked my moon moods, my feelings, reactions, and responses with the moon, for a long enough time to have patterns appear. When the moon is in Virgo, for instance, I notice the pattern that I tend to get a lot done and have energy to be specific and detail-oriented. I also have found that these couple of days in the month are not successful planning days when it comes to communicating with my partner. The timing is good for me planning-wise, though this tracking method has helped me see my partner’s responses to the moon and Universal flow as well.
I have created some tools to assist in this mapping. The first one is the Moon Mapping Worksheet. Each of these slices represents a house in the natal chart. I use Chani’s free natal chart from her website (Chani). You can start with House 1 matching your natal chart first house, or you can just track the phases and not even worry about your chart to begin.
I use them as my natal chart layout. As an example, my first house is Pisces. Label each of the houses for the zodiac in order. For an example, I’ll place the order on the worksheet the way I see my natal chart. Though Aries rules the first house, my natal chart first house is Pisces. Ultimately this format will help when you’re ready to dive into the depths and layers of the meanings of the houses and zodiac.
My Natal Chart Example: House 1: Pisces; House 2: Aries; House 3: Taurus; House 4: Gemini; House 5: Cancer; House 6: Leo; House 7: Virgo; House 8: Libra; House 9: Scorpio; House 10: Sagittarius; House 11: Capricorn; House 12: Aquarius.
From here wherever the moon is in her phase, she is in a zodiac. I use the Full Moon app to track this (Fascinating Projects). I also like the Chart of the Moment to find the daily moon location (Astro-Charts). On the day I am writing this, the moon is in Gemini. I would write self-inquiry notes in my 4th House slice on the Moon Mapping Worksheet, where Gemini is in my Natal Chart. Filling out notes in this way for even 2 months will render patterning.
As an example, the 4th House is foundationally about early childhood conditioning. Gemini lands in this house for me which brings me more meaning, specifically around communication and learning styles, and what this meant for me growing up. I usually don’t think about this part first, however. My main objective when charting moon moods is to initially log feelings, notions, mental states, and synchronicities. When this feels complete, then it’s time to journal into the layers, which include the house activation and zodiac. This assists me in recognizing my personal patterning.
To further this deep dive into Self, I created another worksheet for House Meanings and Activations. No matter where zodiac land in your own chart, the houses will all have a foundational activation. Then adding the layers of the zodiac will reveal more depth. The House is like the room and the Zodiac is like its décor. You may be in the living room (house) and it may be styled quite expressively (zodiac).
The Moon’s phase is also important in this process of tracking Moon Moods. I find that for myself and many times for others, the phase of the moon one is born under seems to be the phase where they have a time of flow rather than ebb, or more activated energy. This is not always the case, but interesting to investigate. To find what phase the moon was in when you were born, I like Birthday Moon on Moongiant.com (MoonGiant).
I hear feedback about many people having more energy at the full moon, though I tend to have less energy and want to ebb during this time. My theory is that, since I was born under a Waning Gibbous, where the moon is getting smaller in illumination, but still more than 50% illuminated, I tend to have more energy as the moon is getting smaller and at the New Moon part of the moon cycle. While the moon increases in illumination, my energy begins to ebb rather than flow.
Additionally, with this Way of Knowing, I add Tarot and archetypal inquiry to discern personal patterning. I write a Moon Moods Substack with Overall, Sun, Moon, and Rising Tarot spreads following the moon (Transpersonal World / Magickal Magpie).
This helps me to understand the energies that come forward from the collective and myself. In writing this, my intention is to help others on their Moon Mapping and tracking journey as well. This assists us in all being in our most aligned flow with the Universe.
Journeying through the phases and zodiac with the moon, I have discovered about myself that, as mentioned earlier, when the moon is in Virgo, I have a lot of mental power and usually the energy to make things happen, get things done, and complete projects more easily than at other times. I learned not to try and plan with my partner on these days, and instead wait to plan with him when the moon is in Gemini. I’ve noticed that when the moon is in Capricorn, I tend to get overwhelmed or somehow unnecessarily overstock my list of things to do. I sometimes have anxiety trying to do too much on Capricorn days. When I realize where I am in relation to the moon, I can give myself grace and honor that flow. Energy realizations with my partner took more months’ time for me to recognize those patterns, where overwhelm in Capricorn was obvious in the second month of charting.
I am a Cancer Sun, Pisces Rising, and Pisces Moon. I used to think that when the moon was in Cancer or Pisces, these would be power days for me. After Moon Mapping, not so much. Actually, these are days when I’m most emotional and need self-care. I try not to plan social days when the moon is phasing in Cancer or Pisces. I do feel that I’m connected deeply to my senses, intuition, and awareness on these days. Writing tends to be good during this time, as well as when the moon is in Gemini for me.
In tracking my Moon Moods, I’ve discovered a way to be self-accepting that I didn’t give myself permission for early on. I realized that I naturally ebb and flow, I’m not constantly “on” and in productive-mode, and that this is not only okay, but it is our nature to ebb and flow. I’ve developed an understanding of myself and others by engaging this way of knowing. I recognize that we are all interacting with the Universe in our delicate and personal ways. We’re sensitive and activated differently, our energy and pace are not a consistent “go.” We move in cycles within our own rhythm, arcs, cadence, reactions, and responses.
These differences are not to be judged, but allowed, discovered, and cherished. Another way this method helped me was in knowing Self instead of comparing Self. We’re not all supposed to be the same. If we were, we’d all be born on the same day! We’re not designed to act the same, or respond in the same ways. Our diversity and unique ways of seeing the world bring us together in the Universe. It allows us to have compassion for our ways of being, and our unique Ways of Knowing.🤍
